Catherine has been engaged in making art since her early years growing up in England and watching her two uncles paint and draw. She currently lives and works in Santa Rosa, Ca. Catherine sees the natural environment as a place of mystery and wonder, a surface to wander upon and investigate; a living laboratory where she can observe and experiment. More recently her residency in 2017 at Laugarvatn, Iceland and exploration of the North Island in 2018 extended her practice into other areas of land appreciation such as geology, history, volcanic and glacier activity, mining and memory of place. Contemporary influences include Tacita Dean, Peter Doig, Mark Bradford, and the mark-making of Julie Mehretu. She selects literature on geology, science and the wilder places for reading and reference, in particular, author Robert McFarlane.
