What is mpox? Mpox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus. Mpox is primarily transmitted through sex or close contact with someone who has mpox. Vaccines can prevent mpox infection in those at risk.
After being exposed, it can take up to 21 days to develop the symptoms of mpox. Early symptoms: fever, sore throat, low energy, swollen lymph nodes, body aches. Within 3 days, a painful or itchy sore(s) may develop and go through several stages before healing.
Currently, most mpox infections have been among men who have sex with men. For everyone, activities that increase risk include:
- Having more than one sex partner.
- Group sex or anonymous sex.
- Having a partner who is at risk.
- Traveling to a place where mpox is spreading.
See a healthcare provider if you are at risk or concerned about a potential mpox infection.
