Hepatitis C (HCV) is a virus transmitted through contact with infected blood that causes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis C is most commonly contracted via shared needles.

It can take between 2 weeks and 6 months to develop the symptoms of Hepatitis C. Symptoms include: abdominal pain, dark colored urine, light colored stool, flu-like symptoms, and jaundice. Many people who contract Hep C do not develop symptoms.

Hep C Risk Factors

  • IV drug use (shared supplies)
  • Incarceration
  • HIV positive
  • High risk sexual behaviors
  • Current or past nasal drug use
  • Shared razors
  • Blood transfusion or organ transplant prior to July 1992
  • Healthcare workers exposure to blood
  • Hemodialysis
  • People born to a parent with Hep C
  • Unregulated tattoos

Hep C can be treated and cured with medication. Going without treatment can eventually be fatal.
