Hepatitis C (HCV) is a virus transmitted through contact with infected blood that causes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis C is most commonly contracted via shared needles.
It can take between 2 weeks and 6 months to develop the symptoms of Hepatitis C. Symptoms include: abdominal pain, dark colored urine, light colored stool, flu-like symptoms, and jaundice. Many people who contract Hep C do not develop symptoms.
Hep C Risk Factors
- IV drug use (shared supplies)
- Incarceration
- HIV positive
- High risk sexual behaviors
- Current or past nasal drug use
- Shared razors
- Blood transfusion or organ transplant prior to July 1992
- Healthcare workers exposure to blood
- Hemodialysis
- People born to a parent with Hep C
- Unregulated tattoos
Hep C can be treated and cured with medication. Going without treatment can eventually be fatal.
