What is Post-Exposure Prophylaxis?

PEP or Post Exposure Prophylaxis is a medication taken within 72 hours of potential HIV exposure to prevent infection.

It is for people who are HIV-negative or who don’t know their HIV status and in the last 72 hours may have been exposed to HIV through unprotected sex, sharing needles or injection equipment, needlestick injury, or sexual assault. If any of these apply, contact a healthcare or emergency care provider and ask about PEP.
